Revitalising Competencies
This seminar provided a useful forum for:
Showing how to get the most from competencies
Demonstrating ways of securing senior management support
Integrating competencies with existing systems
Ensuring competencies are not just another initiative
It also explored why competencies work and when to use them, and included a live case study example from the London Borough of Sutton. The case study showed how competencies in place since 1993 were not linked to corporate systems and were regarded as outdated and irrelevant by managers. People Work Best helped the Council to develop new competencies, with buy-in from the Chief Executive, that reflected core values and policy aims. These in turn were linked to the appraisal system, selection procedures and management development programmes.
Selecting the Best
This seminar looked at how structured assessment methods help select the best
person for the job. It answered the questions:
What do we mean by selection and assessment?
How to uncover the real person can they really do the job?
The seminar also examined some of the weaknesses of superficial assessment centres and why they dont always work.
Competencies in Action
This seminar demonstrated an innovative and cost-effective approach to development
centres in local government. Using a pioneering project conducted by the London
Borough of Lewisham, the seminar showed:
How to design development centres for maximum effect
How to ensure that participants derive maximum benefit
How to test and validate newly developed management competencies
